Philosopher prof. dr. Ruud Welten (Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Tilburg) explores our desire to travel. Do we travel for escape? Or does it broaden our minds, as the cliché goes? What is it we are looking for when we go out into the world, armed with our cameras and guidebooks? The lecture delves into the relationship between traveling and thinking, between a tourist gaze and a philosophical point of view. The way tourists and travellers perceive their surroundings when they travel is the topic of the lecture: their expectations, their struggle to find a way to relate with the other and with the unexpected, their minds partly at home, partly abroad.
